A fine Indiaman flying dutch colours.
While primarily equipped to carry cargo these merchant ships were armed very well to defend themselves against any foe.
Because many of these ships sailed under the flag of the East India Trading Companies or followed trade routes to India they were nicknamed “Indiamen”.
